Improving NaNDA Discoverability: Removing Barriers from a Research GemAn interrogation of how neighborhood-level data should be described and represented for easier discovery and reuse. The National Neighborhood Data Archive (NaNDA) is a publicly available data archive containing measures of the physical, economic, demographic, and social environment at multiple levels of spatial scale. We want to know how metadata affects the ways in which users access and experience the NaNDA repository. Our research is framed around the understanding that Computational Social Scientists have unique information needs that require specialized resources to conduct research and scholarship. This project then seeks to address the obstacles and challenges that come with designing metadata systems that support specialized scholarly-work in the social sciences.

The Negative Library of Other Networks: Permacomputing & The Cozy WebA Permacomputing Web Archive that addresses appraisal, collection settings, quality assurance, & metadata description. The scope of this project prioritizes blogs & web histories dedicated to alternative visions for the internet. More specifically, this project focuses on cozy web or poetic web perspectives of ecology, namely permacomputing, feral web, and low-tech horizons. The report documents the appraisal criteria used to acquire relevant material and maintain the collection's scope; the ideal capture settings of the collection; Quality Assurance workflow and related procedures; and lastly, design oriented depictions of Web Archiving workflow(s) and documentation policies related to copyright and fair use, or intellectual property overall.

Individual Reflective Essay: DigitizationThis reflection investigates how medium might represent reality, and how libraries and archives face up to the digital.Working from this viewpoint of mutual conditioning, the shared mediation of the analog and the digital, this reflection builds on scholarship that foregrounds the best practices for digital imaging and the digitization of Audiovisual (AV) material in order to investigate how a medium might represent reality.

Tracking Changes: The Literary “Canon” & Bestsellers in CirculationA data analysis & ML project that seeks to investigate relationships between canonicity & real-world circulation.Which canonical authors might the public still be reading? What motivates audiences to reach for a particular novel, canonical or otherwise? How might the circulation of canonized books compare to the circulation of bestsellers? Reading & reception data is hard to come by, but our project seeks to investigate relationships between canonicity & real-world circulation through three datasets: Top 500 Canonical Novels (A ranked list of the 500 most critically acclaimed novels, with bibliographic metadata, OCLC library holdings, and Goodreads ratings), Seattle Public Library Checkout Data (A monthly count of Seattle Public Library checkouts by title for physical and electronic items. 50M+ Checkout Records), and a list of International Bestsellers (Weekly bestseller list data aggregated across multiple countries, tracking commercially successful titles and their author)

Source Type Facet Classification (STFC): Record-keeping in the Age of the Relational DatabaseThrough the re-engineering of tables into categories, an environment emerges - metadata as architecture. The database is the essential form for understanding the logics of digital information systems; Through the layers of platform assemblages there exists a materiality, a substance. But can data be managed in the same way as a record? Does the management of records differ from the management of information? What might LIS professionally contribute to a diverse information ecology. For my project I looked at a particular organization called The Syllabus, examining how they harvest, store, and curate data for their clients, with goal of efficiently indexicalizing their database records in order to improve access and the speed of data retrieval

Information Resources and Services Coursework ExamplesQuick pitches for Digital Resources.Librarians are not well-known for their marketing campaigns and thus can become frustrated when “no one” realizes what a library can provide to patrons for free. For each project, a research tool's purpose, content, search functionalities, and special features is explored through elements of design.
